Host Dave Schlom gets to delve into his favorite pastime, fly fishing, with two of his heroes -- Mike Mercer and Bryan Quick from The Fly Shop in Redding, California.

Quick gives us some insight into his friend and colleague, Mercer, to kick off the program. Mercer's flies are known throughout the world as proven fish catchers. His decades of work at The Fly Shop and his passion for sharing insights into fly angling led to him being inducted into the Northern California Council, Fly Fishers Hall of Fame in 2024.

Mercer helps to demystify the world of fly fishing that can seem a bit intimidating for those just getting started and explains how a simple childhood love of fishing and nature led him to his dream career and lifestyle.

From the science of figuring out what insects trout are feeding on to the art of tying flies from thread and feathers to mimic them, Mercer shares his passion and wonder while exploring the world's rivers in search of wild fish.

An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
